The beard guide

A beard, one stage at a time

Pick the stage you are at. Each one says what we do, how long the visit takes and when to come back.

A barber's scissors trimming the edge of a full beard on a client seen in profile
First shaping: 30 min

Growing out

Let it come in. At about four weeks, a first shaping sets the cheek line and the neckline and leaves the length alone, so the growth looks chosen rather than forgotten.

  • Come in at about four weeks of growth

  • Tell us how long you want to go

  • We set the lines and leave the length

Full shaping: 30 min

Shaping

The shape follows your jaw and the way the hair grows. Your barber sets the cheek line high or low, squares or rounds the bottom and blends the sides into the hair above them.

  • Bring a photo of a beard you like

  • The cheek line and neckline come first

  • You see the shape before the last pass

Maintenance trim: 20 min

Keeping it up

A short visit every two to three weeks holds the shape. We clean the edges, even the length and send you home with how to comb and wash it between visits.

  • Edges and neckline: 15 minutes

  • Maintenance trim: 20 minutes

  • Comb it dry and wash it gently between visits

A client wrapped in a white towel reclines in a barber chair as a gloved hand holds a razor above his face
Hot towel shave: 45 min

Shaving comfort

A warm towel softens the whiskers, a lather cushions the skin and a new blade is used for every shave. Tell us if your skin is sensitive and we will slow down.

  • Warm towel, then lather, then the razor

  • A new blade for every shave

  • Tools are disinfected between clients

Questions

Before your first visit

Can I walk in?

Yes, Tuesday to Friday when a chair is open. Sign the board by the door and it shows who is next. Saturdays are booked only.

How long should my beard be before a first shaping?

About four weeks of growth is a good start. If it is shorter, come in anyway and we will tell you when to come back.

How often should I come back?

Most beards hold their shape with a maintenance trim every two to three weeks. A beard that grows fast or a sharp cheek line may want it sooner.

Can I book one barber?

Yes. Choose a barber when you book, or pick the next open chair.
